Most homeowners never think about flushing their water heater until something goes wrong. Regular flushing removes sediment that settles at the bottom of the tank, and it's one of the simplest ways to extend your water heater's life and improve its efficiency.
In the Treasure Valley, we recommend flushing your water heater once per year. Our water has moderate hardness, which means mineral sediment accumulates faster than in areas with soft water. Homes with very hard water or well water may benefit from flushing every 6 months.
Sediment buildup causes several problems. It reduces heating efficiency (the burner has to heat through a layer of sediment before reaching the water), causes rumbling and popping noises, reduces the amount of available hot water, and accelerates tank corrosion that leads to leaks and premature failure.
While some handy homeowners flush their water heaters themselves, we recommend having it done by a professional during an annual maintenance visit. We can inspect the anode rod (which protects the tank from corrosion), check the temperature and pressure relief valve, and assess the overall condition of the unit. All important for safety and longevity.
If your water heater hasn't been flushed in several years, the sediment may be too compacted for a simple drain. In these cases, professional flushing with a higher-volume flush technique may be needed.
